ROMA TRE AGAINST THE MAFIA
ROMA TRE AGAINST THE MAFIA
Presentation of the project coordinated by Vice Rector Anna Lisa Tota and Deputy Rector Marco Catarci
12 classrooms dedicated to victims of the mafia to promote a culture of legality
The Roma Tre University is honoured to announce the initiative “Roma Tre Against the Mafia“, a project that reflects the core values on which the University bases its activities: the fight against all forms of crime, the commitment to social justice, and the promotion of citizenship skills both inside and outside the University, with the awareness that the value of legality is fundamental to democratic life.
In this context, Roma Tre University has decided to dedicate 12 classrooms to innocent victims of the mafia. This decision is not only a tribute but also a tangible commitment to remember and honour those who lost their lives due to a vile and ruthless crime.
The significance of this message primarily involves the commemoration of the victims and the expression of deep, shared solidarity with their families. Moreover, in line with its institutional mission, through this initiative, Roma Tre aims not only to promote the culture of legality and solidarity but also to contribute to the strengthening of public memory of mafia crimes. It seeks to educate current and future generations to stand firmly against all forms of organized crime and to work together to build a more just society.
The mafia poses a threat to democracy and peaceful coexistence. Fighting it is a moral and civic duty that Roma Tre University embraces, standing alongside those who battle daily to oppose this phenomenon.
With this spirit, Roma Tre proudly supports the “XXIX Giornata della memoria e dell’impegno in ricordo delle vittime innocenti delle mafie”, the day of remembrance of mafia victims, an initiative organized by “Libera. Associazioni, nomi e numeri contro le mafie”, which will take place in Rome on March 21, 2024.
“Roma Tre Against the Mafia” is a project that transcends the University and its academic community: it is an invitation to all, so that we may unite in the fight against the mafia and in the construction of a better future. Together, we can truly make a difference, and Roma Tre is determined to contribute, starting from its own classrooms.
The project will kick off on March 18 at 3:00 PM with an event held at the Aula Magna of the Rectorate (Via Ostiense, 133).
After opening remarks by Rector Prof. Massimiliano Fiorucci and General Director Arch. Alberto Attanasio, and an introduction by Vice Rector Prof. Anna Lisa Tota, the event will feature speeches by Don Luigi Ciotti, President of Libera; Vincenza Rando, Senator of the Italian Republic and member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Mafia and other criminal organizations, including foreign ones; Nando Dalla Chiesa, President of Società scientifica italiana di studi su mafie e antimafia (SISMA, the Italian Scientific Society for Mafia and Anti-Mafia Studies) and Honorary President of Libera; Paolo Borrometi, Deputy Director of the Italian News Agency; and Roma Tre student Vittoria Podo. The meeting will be moderated by Prof. Marco Catarci, Deputy Rector, delegate for relations with schools, third sector and voluntary organisations, public and private bodies.
